Why Video Advertising Isn’t Going Anywhere in 2019

They say a picture says 1000 words. Well, ‘they’ also say that one-minute video advertising says 1.8 million words (Insivia). We did the maths and worked out that that’s a whole lot of stuff your business can say in half the time it takes to cook some noodles.

Humans are consuming a huge amount of video content online. Mobile video consumption is rising by 100% every year, with 78% of people watching online videos every week and over 1 billion hours of video watched every day on YouTube. That’s just one platform. Netflix, Facebook, Instagram, IGTV, social media stories, LinkedIn, Snapchat, TikTok, Twitter and MORE are all on the rise.

What’s the reason for this giant surge in video advertising content? Well, there’s a few, and learning about them is the first step in capitalising on them for your business.

Statistics show that viewers retain 95% of a message when told in a video compared to 10% when reading (sorry). That’s because our brains are much better at processing these visual images, and so they can store more information. Not only does this mean that the viewers will be able to remember more, but they’ll also be able to remember it for longer.

Video content is much more persuasive. It can also be a lot more interesting and creative. Consumers are 64% more likely to take some action on a product through a video message. However, even if they don’t, an enjoyable video increases purchase intent by 97% and brand association by 139% (Unruly)!

An enjoyable video means it’s more likely to be shared with friends, shared to pages or spoken about to others. This is great (and free) publicity. Even though viral is usually associated with colds and the flu, viral in this space is the GOAL. Social media videos generate 1200% more shares than text and image context combined (G2 Crowd).

Time to get moving.

What would get your attention more: a photo of a burger or a video of a burger with cheese and sauce dripping off it, steam rising from the bun and someone taking a big bite out of it? How about an image of a woman wearing workout gear or a woman running up a mountain, sweating and grinning finishing her workout? Personally, we want the melting cheese.

Why are these advertisements so much more impactful? The answer is simple; movement. Movement tricks our brains into thinking something is really there. It puts us in the shoes of whoever or whatever is being shown to us. For the case of the burger, our mouth starts to water and we can almost smell the food and feel the heat. For the runner, our heart beats faster as we feel her struggle and subsequent elation at her achievement.

So that’s now. Where’s the future heading?

By 2021, it’s estimated that every single second, one million minutes of video content will cross global IP networks. That’s such a difficult and overwhelming number to wrap your head around.
